It’s January. It’s cold and grey. And let’s be honest – we’re all just trying to get by here in Ohio. Just trying to make it through what always seems like an endless winter and hold out until the first few signs of spring start popping up.

When my husband and I started to feel the impact of those ‘winter blahs’, we decided that a short, easy get-away was much needed, and booked a cabin in the beautiful area of Hocking Hills, just an hour(ish) southeast of Columbus which is a fairly easy trip with kiddos.

While the weather decided not to cooperate on our trip – think pouring rain ALL day that ended up turning to ice and single digit temperatures – we certainly made the best of some much needed family time. Here are some highlights from our 2(ish) day excursion that did not require us to be outside in the elements. Keep in mind, though, that Hocking Hills is actually the PERFECT place to go if you are outdoorsy so if the weather is tolerable,, be sure to check out this Hocking Hills Trip Planner for hiking trails and noteworthy landmarks.

  • Rockmill Brewery: If you’re traveling to Hocking Hills from Columbus, be sure to check out Rockmill on the way (about 30 minutes into the trip). Located on a former horse farm near Lancaster, Ohio, this brewery is absolutely picturesque — and the beers are fantastic as well. You’ll see numerous buildings on the property as they are known for hosting special events, but we always enjoy grabbing a beer in their taproom. My favorite is the Saison (Farmhouse Ale), but you really can’t go wrong with any of their brews. Be sure to bring some snacks for the kiddos, though, since they don’t serve food.
  • Hocking Hills Diner – This full-service restaurant had our heart with their ‘breakfast all day’ menu, but they also offer classic lunch and dinner specials (listed on a giant white board when you walk in). If you’re looking for a Hocking Hills staple with good home-cooked food, this popular diner is certainly worth checking out. Coffee lover? Enjoy a cappuccino, latte or espresso — perfect for those chilly days!
  • Games, games, games! So, the WiFi situation wasn’t ideal where we stayed (it probably is different depending on the cabin that you rent). Initially, I panicked, but then realized that we finally had a good excuse to disconnect and talk to each other! I prepared by bringing quite a few games for the kids. Here are some of their favorites:
  • Hocking Hills Winery: After a day cooped up in a cabin with a 2 and 4-year-old, we were certainly ready to head out for a quick drink at this popular winery. We ordered a ‘tasting’ which included 8 different wines to try along with a cheese plate. There are some other snacks available, but you are welcome to order takeout to the winery or even use their propane grills to make your own meal. They offer grape juice for little ones, the patio is pet-friendly and they often feature live music! Not a wine drinker? They offer beer, soda, tea and coffee as well.

  • Christy’s Pizza – Staying in for the night? Christy’s is a solid choice if you’re in the mood for pizza. They offer unique topping combinations like the Philly Cheesesteak featuring sliced sirloin steak or The Islander which contains a combination of ham, pineapple and provolone. Check out the calzone, sub & salad options as well!

Overall, we had the best time, and can’t wait to go back again. While I would love to have some warmer weather, I wouldn’t be devastated if we had to repeat our ‘not-so-outdoorsy’ adventure again 😉
