Note: Check out our experience at Savoir Cooking & Wine last year (2019). We had so much fun participating in a LIVE cooking class with so many of our close friends. As you all know, times are a bit different now so we were thrilled to see that Savoir is offering a virtual class focused on creating the perfect holiday appetizer spread 🙂 Check out their event calendar for information on their current offerings!
While we very much enjoy exploring the city with our kiddos, my husband and I always strive to carve out time each week for much needed date nights. Whether it’s just a late night dinner that we enjoy after the kids go to sleep or an actual trip out to a new restaurant, we have always made it a priority to spend some time with one another.Â
We are always on the lookout for new and different ‘date night’ activities, and our discovery of Savoir Cooking & Wine has been one that we can’t stop talking about. Located in the heart of historic downtown Powell, this quaint house on N. Liberty Street is home to a unique local business. Best known for their hands-on cooking classes, Savoir provides the opportunity to participate in a variety of workshops and classes regardless of your skill level. The experience is fun and relaxed, and owners, Mike McCauley and Mike Frank, will walk you through various cooking and baking techniques — and then allow you to actually do it yourself.Â
I’ll admit that my skills in the kitchen aren’t anything to brag about, but my experience was surprisingly stress-free. I mean, they offer wine and beer to sip on throughout the evening so this isn’t culinary school. It’s just FUN. So fun, that I’ve actually participated in three different classes so far — and I can’t wait to try the next one!Â
My first experience was a corporate event — a fun, team-building activity that my company organized to spend some time out of the office over lunch. I enjoyed it so much that I convinced my husband to attend their sushi-making workshop with me, and we had an absolute blast learning how to make one of our favorite dishes.
Our most recent adventure was a birthday celebration for one of our great friends — and our group of twelve loved every minute of learning how to prepare an amazing variety of holiday hors d’oeuvres. Each pair took on a different appetizer, and my husband and I were tasked with making the Beef Barbacoa with Avocado Poblano Salsa. It was so much fun learning how to prepare a new dish, and we specifically loved learning how to char poblano peppers directly on a gas burner (something that we likely would NOT have tried at home). The result was delicious despite the pretty intense spice that those peppers added 🙂
Additional dishes included Chorizo Manchego Flatbread…
Pot Stickers…
Seared Scallops with Beurre Blanc…
Sous Vide Deviled Eggs…
And Brie En Croute along with Crostini with Leeks, Goat Cheese, and Bacon (also including the Beef Barbacoa & Chorizo Manchego Flatbread)…
Despite being incredibly full, we still managed to enjoy the grand finale, a rich, creamy Dark Chocolate Mousse…
Overall, it was an amazing experience — and after we were done in the kitchen, we were able to move to a room with a large community table to enjoy our meal and finish off our wine 🙂Â
